Latest From NFL: Rose Bowl
Issue Will Be Decided By Next Spring
Another
10 months may be needed for the National Football League to decide
whether the Rose Bowl will be home to an NFL franchise. Emerging
from a May meeting with NFL team owners, a league official said "the
process is pointing toward next spring" for owners to choose among
three competing entries – the Rose Bowl, the L.A. Memorial Coliseum
and an undeveloped 157-acre landfill in the city of Carson south of
downtown L.A.
Said NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue:
"At some point decisions need to be made. Everyone’s had a real good
period of analysis, and now we have to start making some decisions."
The target year for a team to start playing in the L.A. market is
2008.
Observers believe that the Coliseum
is the current front-runner, being the only contender with a
completed Environmental Impact Report and a renovation plan
supported by historic preservationists.
Rose Bowl Re-Design
Pasadena, on the other hand, is still working on a re-design of
the 81-year-old Rose Bowl. A $500-million renovation plan unveiled
last year was reportedly shot down by the NFL as being too costly,
too underground, and too time-consuming to build. Once completed
(perhaps in July), the renovation plan must undergo a lengthy
environmental review process, including what promises to be
contentious
LVAA Position
The Linda Vista/Annandale Assn. is on
record urging City Council to take a "clear and assertive" stance on
a number of NFL/Rose Bowl issues it did not address in a "vision
statement" adopted last year. These issues include:
- Environmental protection of the Arroyo;
- insulation of affected neighborhoods from noise, trash,
lights, disorderly conduct and commercialization;
- maximum public access to Brookside Park on weekends for
walking, biking, swimming and picnicking;
- emphasis on shuttle service from remote locations;
- improved traffic calming and street barricades; and
- formation of a commission – with citizen membership — to
oversee mitigation efforts and EIR compliance
