Observations:
LVAA To
Participate in Rose Bowl EIR Process
by Michael Hurley, LVAA
President
In late August, the Rose Bowl Operating Co. (RBOC) unveiled its
revised plans to redesign the Rose Bowl to house an NFL team. The
new plan would expand the stadium by nearly one-million square feet
while adding two four-level towers, including 200 luxury suites. The
stadium’s seating capacity would drop from 92,500 to 65,000 and a
new ground-level plaza would feature a museum and store.
Though discussions have taken place over the past two years, the
RBOC’s latest announcement kicks off the final official process to
analyze whether the NFL and the Rose Bowl are a "good fit." This
latest design, which recently went before the City Council, will
serve as the basis of an Environmental Impact Report. NFL officials
have established a target of May 2005 for making a decision on a
site.
LVAA Involvement
As with any project that may impact our neighbor-hood, an LVAA
committee will monitor the progress of this proposal. The board of
directors’ Arroyo Committee, led by former LVAA president Norm
Parker, will participate in the EIR process to ensure that any
potential impacts on our neighborhood are thoroughly studied.
Additionally, the LVAA will be holding an educational forum on
the proposal at the Art Center College of Design campus on Saturday,
October 16, starting at 9 a.m. The purpose of this forum is to
inform the neighborhood about the proposed renovation, outline the
environmental review process (including how residents can
participate), and present pertinent issues such as historic
preservation and impacts to recreation that may affect the city’s
decision.
Invited speakers include Richard Bruckner, Director of Planning
and Permitting for the city; Darryl Dunn, General Manager of the
Rose Bowl; Sue Mossman, Executive Director of Pasadena Heritage; and
Frank Osen, chair of the Pasadena Recreation and Parks Commission.
The forum will also be an opportunity for you to ask questions and
share your views.
