One-Million Square Feet Could be Added to Rose Bowl in Latest Design Concept Proposed By Stadium Management

This artist’s rendering shows how and where a million square feet may be added to the Rose Bowl. The stadium would be crowned on the east and west sides with three levels of suites. A Club Level for premium seating would be added to the west side. An upper concourse would run under the stadium’s rim, and a spacious plaza would be built on the south side to formalize the main entrance. Click on image for larger view

How closely will a re-designed and NFL-sanctioned Rose Bowl resemble the Rose Bowl that we know today?

Too early to say.

Even the latest rehabilitation plan approved by the Rose Bowl Operating Co. in August is described as "conceptual" and subject to change.

But there’s no denying that major alterations are in store for the 81-year-old Pasadena landmark. Most notably:

• Up to 1-million sq. ft. would be added within several levels of the stadium.

• New tunnels would be cut into the Bowl to give upper level fan access to restrooms and eating concessions.

• A new exterior structure would be added along the Bowl’s west side to house club lounges with premium seating and other amenities.

• The suites and press box currently located on three levels along the western rim would be replaced by 200 suites and expanded press facilities on four levels atop the Bowl’s east and west sides.

• The Bowl’s seating capacity would be reduced from approx. 93,000 seats to 65,000. Additional temporary

seating would be provided for special events such as the Rose Bowl Game and Super Bowl.

• The parking area would be improved with landscaping. A spacious entry plaza would be developed to formalize the south end as the Bowl’s main entrance.

According to a statement by the RBOC staff: "A goal of the proposed rehabilitation is to retain the Bowl’s National Historic Landmark designation while improving the experience for tenants, users and visitors to the site."

Traffic, Parking

RBOC staff also noted that "existing traffic controls will be reviewed to improve the system’s overall efficiency. Additional measures to improve circulation such as studying lane movement, expanded shuttle service, additional traffic control officers, and the utilization and integration of the new Metro Gold line light rail will be explored."

Parking in the Arroyo would not be expanded beyond its current use, said the RBOC. Regular season NFL games dictate the need for about 18,000 parking spaces, 3,000 fewer than currently available. More parking will be located in Old Pasadena, where visitors will be shuttled to the stadium.

2nd Renovation Plan

This is the second renovation plan for the Rose Bowl prepared by the architectural firm of HOK and approved by the RBOC. The first, unveiled in 2003, was rejected by NFL owners as too costly.
