Neighborhood Update: Art Center College of Design (Art Center)

Dear Neighbors:

We have confirmed from the Art Center website that the Board of Trustees of the college has decided that they will not pursue an extension of the contract of Art Center’s current President, Richard Koshalek.

See the bottom of this message for website addresses of recent articles from the Pasadena Star-News, L.A. Weekly, the Los Angeles Times, and the Art Center website that describe a variety of internal issues that are of concern to Art Center students, faculty, and alumni. Although these matters are not all related to our neighborhood concerns about the pending proposed Master Plan for the Lida Street campus, questions are raised about expansion of the site when so many other current needs are going unfulfilled.

LVAA continues to monitor developments, both on the Art Center campus and at City Hall.  We have no information at this time as to what affect any of these developments will have on the college’s long term Master Plan for expansion currently nearing completion of its Environmental Impact Report (EIR) as it makes its way to the City Council for approval.

LVAA has represented our neighborhood issues and concerns at the Historic Preservation, Transportation Advisory, Design and Planning Commissions.  In all cases comments were made by Commissioners, which were critical of the Plan and the EIR based on to their own areas of responsibility.

LVAA Website
Our website volunteers are working to bring you written materials that LVAA has submitted, summaries of the Commission meetings, and other important information as it becomes available. We will let you know when the Website has been updated.

LVAA is committed to defending the character of our neighborhood and the quality of life in our area, already under constant threat from over-development, drive-through traffic from other cities, and overflow from the arroyo.  We believe that placing limits on the proposed expansion, even a roll-back of existing traffic, is essential to prevent a permanent decline in safety, aesthetics, and quality of life in our community.

Sincerely,

Norm Parker, LVAA President
